1st act
Siegfried grew up in the forest with Mime, the blacksmith. When he is researching his parents, Mime tells him about Siegfried's mother, who died at birth and only left behind the broken Notung sword that his father wore in the last fight. When Siegfried is once again out and about in the forest, a hiker appears, in whom one recognizes Wotan, and challenges Mime to a knowledge bet, which Mime loses. Mime also learns from the wanderer that only those who do not know fear can forge the Notung sword again. Mime knows that this person is Siegfried. Mime promises Siegfried to learn to be afraid by fighting the dragon Fafner. Secretly he hopes to get the Nibelungenring and the Nibelungenhort guarded by Fafner through Siegfried. Siegfried succeeds in forging the Notung sword straight away.
2nd act
Mime's brother Alberich watches over the dragon's cave. The wanderer who visits this announces the arrival of Mimes and Siegfried. Alberich's attempt to persuade Fafner to surrender the ring fails. Siegfried kills Fafner after a short fight. After the dragon blood has moistened Siegfried's mouth, he understands the language of the birds. A forest bird draws Siegfried's attention to the ring and hoard. The mime who rushes back and is trying to kill Siegfried, he kills with the sword Notung and follows the forest bird, who tells him about the sleeping Brünnhilde.
3rd act
The wanderer wakes Erda and explains to her that he wants to abdicate in favor of young Siegfried. But the rushing Siegfried treats the wanderer hardly any differently than Mime did before. He smashes the hiker's spear on which the sword of Siegfried's father Siegmund once broke, and makes his way to a rock surrounded by fire. There he finds the sleeping Brünnhilde, whom he wakes up. Both awaken in love for one another.
