Saul is the king of Israel, chosen by God and venerated by the people. After David killed Goliath in the battle against the Philistines and was able to return home victorious, he is introduced to Saul and his family. Everyone is blinded by the radiance of the young hero. Saul's son Jonathan immediately offers him his intimate friendship, and Saul himself wants to marry him off to his daughter Merab. This, however, expresses itself disparagingly about David and criticizes his low birth. Meanwhile, the people of Israel praise their popular King Saul, but also the new hero David. A single sentence echoes in Saul's ears: "Saul, a thousand struck your sword, David even struck ten thousand." Saul deeply injured this negation and he fell mad. David is supposed to have a healing effect on him with the power of his harp, but he does not succeed. Saul tries to kill David with the spear. But David escapes. Saul finally orders his son Jonathan to murder David. This resists. Saul develops a new plan: instead of his older daughter Merab, he now wants to marry David with his younger daughter Michal - the young people are also fond of each other. Furthermore, he wants to send him into battle against the Philistines and thus to (supposedly) certain death ...
