Rigoletto - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Rigoletto
Opera in three acts, libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the verse drama »Le Roi s’amuse« by Victor Hugo
Premiered June 21, 2008
In Italian with German and English surtitles
The fool appears poisonous green in Nikolaus Lehnhoff's production of »Rigoletto«, and the mockery with which he rails against the courtiers of the Duke of Mantua is poisonous. However, his inside is black, always worried about his daughter Gilda, whom he jealously shields in order to protect her from the grasp of the duke, a feared womanizer. When Gilda falls victim to the duke, Rigoletto swears bloody revenge. But this falls back on himself ... »Rigoletto« was first performed in 1851 at the Teatro La Fenice with overwhelming success. Giuseppe Verdi had created music that he himself described as “revolutionary”, and the deeply shocking drama of what is perhaps the best opera by the great Italian develops with music-dramatic density that has never been heard before.
