Orfeo ed Euridice - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Orfeo ed Euridice

Dramma per musica in four acts
Joseph Haydn

Libretto by Carlo Francesco Bandini

A work that is as fascinating as it is enigmatic crowns and ends Joseph Haydn's opera work. L'anima del filosofo ossia Orfeo ed Euridice tells the opera's primal myth of the singer Orpheus, who defied the gods and with his singing freed his dead beloved Eurydice from the underworld. The opera was to be premiered in London in 1791 and, like the London symphonies of the same period, shows Haydn at the peak of his powers. But the premiere fell through and Haydn left the work unfinished. Ádám Fischer, an advocate for Haydn's music for many years, now conducts this late masterpiece.
