Merope - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Merope

Opera seria in three acts
Libretto by Apostolo Zeno

When Domènech Terradellas, originally from Barcelona, died under unclear circumstances at the age of 38, the music world lost one of the developers of the "stile galante", who was not given enough time to establish himself as an influential composer. Merope, with which he made his breakthrough in Italy in the carnival season of 1744 in Livorno, shows that a highly talented and individual artistic personality had developed here. The plot combines elements of psychological thriller and soap opera: Queen Merope's husband has been murdered by a tyrant who then asks for her hand. The queen's stipulated ten-year period of reflection has just expired, but she is still hoping for rescue. She had her underage son brought to safety and raised to become an avenger. Now he returns and falls into the clutches of absurd court intrigues.
