With the premiere of »Manon« in 1884, Jules Massenet celebrated what is probably the greatest triumph of his career as a composer – both in France and outside of his home country. What impressed the audience right from the start was the variety of musical forms and textures: in a flash, there is a change between mass scenes and chamber play-like sections, every scene, no matter how brief, has its own multi-faceted mood between genre painting, comedy and sensitive tragedy. At the same time, in comparison to the original novel, Massenet reinforces the mystery of the man-beguiling child-woman Manon, drifting between love and luxury. Andrei Serban's staging picks up the rhythm of the score and, with the help of projections, lets lush stage shots follow clearly drawn detailed shots, occasionally expanding the stage space in an unusually sophisticated way through the use of mirrors. After her house debut as Susanna in the »Nozze di Figaro« revival in January 2021, the British soprano Louise Alder will give her first Viennese Manon Lescaut, and the American tenor Michael Fabiano will make her debut as her stage lover Chevalier Des Grieux. In the role of the dubious Lescaut, audience favorite Adrian Eröd can once again be experienced.
