Based on genuine historical events, the story of the geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly, inspired Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) to one of his most moving operas. After her wedding night with the American lieutenant Pinkerton, he leaves her to live with his wife in the United States. Cio-Cio-San waits for him for many years together with their son, but must ultimately discover that she has been used and commits suicide.
For director Joan Anton Rechi the tragedy of Cio-Cio-San is one of the saddest stories ever told in an opera. In Alfons Flores’ poetic stage spaces he creates impressive images to show how this young woman immerses herself in her love for the absent Pinkerton and ends up losing not only her illusions, but also her life.
Subject to change.
