The speculation as to whether Libussa Bedřich is Smetana's most mature work in the context of his operatic work or even in the context of Czech opera in general, whether it has the airiness of The Bartered Bride, the lyricism and absorbing power of Dvořák's Rusalka or the emotion and drama of Leoš Janáček's operas , do not lead to definitive conclusions – it will always depend on what angle Libussa and any other famous Czech opera is viewed from.

The point of view that comes most naturally to Libussa is determined by the composer's intention and the resulting tradition. Bedřich Smetana composed Libusa for festive occasions in connection with the life of Czech society, which after 1860 began to emancipate itself culturally, politically and economically in a clear and noticeable way. One such landmark event in the history of Czech society was the opening of the National Theater, first temporarily in 1881 and finally two years later. An event that went far beyond the narrow universe of Czech theatrical creation on a symbolic level and became a harbinger of gaining independence in 1918. Accordingly, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic was a significant anniversary for the National Theater itself, giving it an opportunity to stage a new production of Libussa as a contribution to the celebrations.
