La Voix de Poulenc
SYMPHONIETTA
LA DAME DE MONTE CARLO
LA VOIX HUMAINE
Three works by Francis Poulenc
Text by Jean Cocteau
A woman fights for a man's love on the phone – this is what Francis Poulenc and the writer Jean Cocteau tell about in their mono-opera La Voix humaine. The woman only hears the voice of the man who wants to leave her, while we viewers only hear the woman’s voice and see her on stage, recalling good times together, arguing, flirting and begging with him. La Voix humaine, written in 1959, is a monologue about a lost love and the multi-faceted portrait of a strong woman - and at the same time a fascinating opera in which the telephone becomes the third actor in a love drama. Two years later, with La Dame de Monte-Carlo, Poulenc and Cocteau created the portrait of an aging beauty who took refuge in the casinos from the disappointments of life. In a performance with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Anna Catarina Antonacci will slip into the role of these very different female characters. The concert begins with Poulenc's witty Sinfonietta, composed in 1947.
