La traviata is one of Verdi's best-known, most romantic and tragic operas and has been holding up a mirror to society and its hypocritical morality for around 170 years. The terminally ill courtesan Violetta Valéry realizes that she must give up her love for Alfredo Germont, a young man from a respectable family. After leaving him, she dies in poverty, but still dreams of the happiness of true love.
