1st act

Amina's upcoming marriage to Elvino is celebrated. Only Lisa, Elvino's former lover, is sad and doesn't want to come to terms with her new admirer Alessio. At the engagement ceremony, Elvino puts his recently deceased mother's ring on Amina. A stranger arrives - it's Count Rodolfo, who's actually from the area but isn't recognised. He notices Amina and compliments her, which arouses Elvino's jealousy. Amina's foster mother Teresa breaks up the group by warning of a ghost that is up to mischief in the area at night. Amina soothes Elvino's jealousy. Lisa courts the attention of the Count, whose identity she has recognized. Then the sleepwalking Amina enters; in her dream she longs for Elvino. The Count has to force himself not to take advantage of the situation with the affectionate, half-dressed girl. But Lisa fetches Elvino; when he finds Amina sleeping, wrapped in Rodolfo's cloak, the situation seems clear to him. Only Teresa comforts the abandoned and desperate Amina.

2nd act

Elvino buries himself in his pain. Amina's protestations of her innocence remain in vain; Elvino takes the ring off her finger and breaks the engagement. Lisa already sees herself as Elvino's new fiancée. Rodolfo tries to correct the false suspicions: Amina is a sleepwalker who is not guilty. But Elvino is not convinced. When Teresa finds out about his new marriage plans, she reveals the events she observed between Lisa and Rodolfo the previous night. Elvino also sees himself betrayed by the "second bride". While Count Rodolfo tries to save the situation by protesting Amina's innocence, Amina appears again sleepwalking. Seeing her in this state, Elvino understands how the ambiguous situation of the night before could have happened. He, in turn, embraces her as his bride and Amina sings of her happiness.
