Hungarian State Opera House, Andrássy út 22, 1061 Budapest
Opera in three acts, in Italian, with Hungarian and English surtitles
After seeing David Belasco's play The Girl from the Golden West during his visit to New York in 1907, Puccini decided to bring this somewhat unusual love story from the Wild West to the operatic stage. The dramatic material turned out to be a good choice, with a moving plot that guides the viewer to resolution with a sure hand. The character of Minnie also fits perfectly into the series of Puccini's heroines: Driven by love and passion, she is not afraid of risking her own life.
The play is performed at the Opera House in a staging by Vasily Barkhatov, who works regularly across Russia and Europe.
