The list of Cinderella adaptations is long - no wonder, given that the story of the unhappy stepdaughter, who is ultimately allowed to experience a happy ending, moved generations of viewers. Why? Perhaps less because of the wealthy prince's "rescue" than because of the final affirmation that kindness and a pure heart can conquer all adversity.
Gioachino Rossini created a so-called »semiseria«, i.e. a half-serious opera in which he mixed his brilliant buffo art with sentimental and occasionally even tragic tones. Sven-Eric Bechtolf's staging shifts the action to the fictional and whimsical mini-kingdom of San Sogno.
Plot
1st act
Don Magnifico, his two daughters Clorinda and Tisbe and his stepdaughter Angelina (called Cenerentola) live together in a run-down household. While the two daughters have nothing on their minds but clothes and entertainment, Cenerentola has to take care of the housework and is bullied by her half-sisters. Clorinda and Tisbe interrupt even her song about the king's son, who chooses the one who has a good heart from three candidates for the bride.
Alidoro, the prince's tutor disguised as a beggar, appears and asks for alms. Only Cenerentola takes pity on him. Then courtiers announce the appearance of Prince Ramiro, who is looking for a bride. There is no stopping Clorinda and Tisbe now: Excitedly they rushed Cenerentola back and forth to be able to dress up quickly. The general hustle and bustle awakens Don Magnifico from a wondrous dream that seems to promise him future happiness: as a flying donkey, sitting on the top of a church tower, he heard the solemn ringing of bells. In the midst of the preparations, Prince Ramiro appears incognito, having swapped roles with his servant Dandini to explore the true characters of the marriage candidates. The prince and Cenerentola fall in love instantly, while Dandini is besotted by Clorinda and Tisbe. Although Don Magnifico forbids Cenerentola, under the threat of violence, to follow the general invitation to the castle, with the help of Alidoro she still manages to attend the party in an elegant ballroom dress - the elegant lady is not recognized as Angelina by the other guests, despite her striking resemblance to Angelina .
2nd act
Don Magnifico, Clorinda and Tisbe hold a family council: the appearance of the competitor has worried the father. What if it turns out he squandered his stepdaughter's inheritance? Ramiro overhears Cenerentola confessing to Dandini that he loves his 'servant'. When he happily proposes to her, she makes one condition: first he should find out who she really is. She gives him one of her two bracelets and tells him to look for her. He should recognize her by the other bracelet that she will wear in her usual surroundings. If he still loves her then she will marry him. Ramiro immediately gives the order to look for the lover who has hurried away. The disguise game is over, Dandini is now valet again and Don Magnifico, to whom Dandini has promised many things, laments the fall from his dream of social advancement and financial rehabilitation. Returning from the festival, Cenerentola dreams again of the king's son, who chooses his wife according to the inclination of his heart. Then a thunderstorm comes up and brings Ramiro's vehicle to a standstill just in front of Don Magnifico's house. Thanks to the bracelet, the prince recognizes his beloved, who in turn is now being informed about his true identity. The happiness of the two is perfect. And even as a princess, Cenerentola does not lose her kindness and forgives her relatives.
