L’elisir d’amore / Der Liebestrank

Melodramma giocoso in two acts, libretto by Felice Romani based on the libretto by Augustin Eugène Scribe for the opera »Le Philtre« by Daniel François Esprit Auber

Premiered April 28, 2012

In Italian with German and English surtitles

The young Nemorino, who is in love with Adina to the point of self-denial, only earns cynical ridicule. She, too, is secretly fascinated by Nemorino, but rejects him and prefers Captain Belcore. The traveling quack Dulcamara promises help. With his "Love Potion of Isolde" he gets people to live their dreams - and makes Nemorino the most desirable bachelor in town. In his opera »The Potion of Love«, which premiered in 1832, Gaetano Donizetti tells the story of love, which in all its varieties is cheerfully smiled at or longed for wistfully, as in Nemorino's famous lament »Una furtiva lagrima«. In addition, director Michael Schulz brings the arrogant, cold-hearted society of »Love Potion« to life and love with numerous surprise effects.
