Her grandson Stewa and his cousin Jenufa, who is expecting a child from Stewa, live in old Buryja's mill. Stewa's stepbrother, the servant Laca, also loves Jenufa, but is rejected by her. In a fit of jealous rage, he cuts her face. Jenufa's beauty, with which she was able to win over Stewa, is gone. A few months later, Jenufa secretly gave birth to the child in the house of her stepmother, the sexton. In vain the sexton begs Stewa to confess to his son. The only hope left for her is Laca, who has long since regretted his crime and would also take Jenufa, but recoils when he learns that she has a child from Stewa. This has died, the sexton tells him and sends him away to prepare everything for the wedding. While Jenufa sleeps, the sexton takes the baby and drowns it in the icy stream. She persuades her stepdaughter that her child died while she, Jenufa, was lying sick with a fever. The child's body is discovered on the day of Jenufa's wedding with Laca, to which Stewa and his fiancé Karolka are also invited. Tormented by pangs of conscience, the sexton confesses to her crime. Jenufa releases Laca, but he professes his love for her.
