Estates Theater Prague

The Estates Theater is one of the most beautiful historical theater buildings in Europe. Its construction was initiated by the enlightened aristocrat František Antonín Count Nostitz Rieneck, who was driven by the desire to beautify his native town and the souls of its residents. Construction took less than two years and the theater opened in 1783. This project, which was extremely important for Prague at that time, corresponded to the zeitgeist of the late 18th century, when European courts, residential cities and cultural centers had national theaters in the spirit of the Enlightenment idea that a theater open to the public is a moral institution that demonstrates the cultural level of the nation , were built.

The first sporadic performances in Czech took place in 1785. From 1812, Sunday and public holiday matinees took place regularly. At that time, these performances also became a kind of political affair. In the difficult years after the failed revolution in 1848, the idea of a Czech national theater was born.
