One of the most popular operas of the 20th century, Der Rosenvavalier (The Knight of the Rose) was created by the German composer Richard Strauss in collaboration with the Austrian writer, playwright and librettist Hugo von Hoffmansthal. Presenting a colorful picture of life in mid-18th-century Vienna, it employs many time-honoured comedy traits – disguises, muddled situations, ridiculous types of people. The premiere of Der Rosenkavalier in Dresden in 1911 was such a sensational success that extra train connections were set up to enable opera fans from all over Europe to travel to the Saxon state capital. Strauss himself described Der Rosenkavalier as a "Mozartean opera" and added that he aimed to create a modern version of Le nozze di Figaro.

Although a comedy whose four protagonists - the aristocratic marshal, her lover Count Octavian, her cousin Baron Ochs and his fiancé-to-be Sophie - are embroiled in a series of intrigues with mistaken identities, the play is also food for thought in that it is so weighty Contains topics such as marital infidelity and human instability.
The new State Opera production of Der Rosenkavalier is a revival of the critically acclaimed adaptation of the Komische Oper Berlin, directed by Andreas Homoki, with Frank Philipp Schlößmann's sets and Gideon Davey's costumes.
