Intermezzo - premiere

A bourgeois comedy with symphonic interludes in two acts. Libretto by the composer

Premiere November 1, 2024

In German with German and English surtitles

How does it feel when life suddenly turns upside down? This is what happens to Christine, the wife of court music director Robert Storch. A wrongly delivered dangerous letter makes her believe that her husband is deceiving her in the most infamous way. She goes through an emotional rollercoaster ride - a near-tragedy takes its course...

After working on the complex “Woman without a Shadow,” Richard Strauss longed for a thoroughly realistic subject; real people should enliven the stage. What could be more natural than to dramatically escalate an incident from your own turbulent married life? A spicy misunderstanding actually caused a real marital crisis in the Strauss household. In almost cinematic, rapidly changing episodes, Richard Strauss draws a character portrait of his wife Pauline and his own artistic existence with a sure instinct for the theatrical in everyday life. The numerous symphonic interludes provide a glimpse into the inner lives of the characters.

This musical declaration of love to the wife of Richard Strauss is staged 100 years after the Dresden premiere by Axel Ranisch, a director who works for cinema, television and the theater and is in love with the opera genre like no other of his generation.
