Lohengrin

Romantic opera in three acts

Premiere September 21, 1983

In German with surtitles

“Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner, premiered in Weimar in 1850, is closely linked to Dresden: Inspired by the charming landscape near Graupa near Dresden, Wagner began the work as Royal Saxon Court Music Director in 1846 and completed it in Dresden in 1849. Since its premiere in Dresden ten years later, the work has been played over 850 times at the Semperoper and, in Christine Mielitz's 1983 production, is one of the classics in the house's repertoire. With clear references to the 19th century and the Middle Ages, the director tells the story of Elsa, who is wrongfully accused of murder and finds herself helpless against her opponents at the Brabant court and is ultimately rescued by the mysterious Swan Knight, as the tragedy of a woman who dies Recognition but also knowledge struggles. With the bitter point that her all-too-justified desire to know to whom she owes her happiness leads to its destruction.
