Der Freischütz

Romantic opera in three acts, libretto by Friedrich Kind, dialogue version by Werner Hintze

Premiered May 1, 2015

In German with German and English surtitles

Max, once the best marksman far and wide, is in a streak of bad luck. A single shot should decide his marriage to Agathe - a matter too important to leave to chance. At midnight in the Wolfsschlucht, Max pours the cursed Freikugeln, which never fail, with the shady Kaspar. The pact with the devil is sealed. "Hit the mark," Carl Maria von Weber rejoiced in 1821 after the world premiere. »Der Freischütz« was soon regarded as the ultimate romantic German opera, because Weber not only found tones for the homeliness of the German forest, but also for its uncanny night sides, for insecurity, doubt and fear. In his production, director Axel Köhler not only tells the fate of a young man who allows himself to be driven to extremes out of fear of failure, he also creates the image of a disoriented society that seeks support in rituals and hierarchies.
