Tragedia giapponese in three acts libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa
Premiere April 2, 2022
In Italian with German and English surtitles
A break after the first act
Work introduction (free)
45 minutes before the start of the performance in the opera cellar
At the center of Giacomo Puccini's Tragedia giapponese, which takes place in Nagasaki at the beginning of the 20th century, is the young geisha Cio-Cio-San, known as "Butterfly". The American naval lieutenant Pinkerton enters into a short-term marriage with Cio-Cio-San - according to the practice that was possible in Japan at the time - and rents a suitable house for their stay. While for Pinkerton the liaison was planned from the outset as an erotic pleasure, for Cio-Cio-San it not only means the opportunity to escape poverty, but also the love of her life... The tragic one, which premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1904, still moves people today Love story shakes hearts, the realism with which it shows the cultural misunderstandings and their deadly consequences. The Japanese director Amon Miyamoto, together with the star designer Kenzō Takada, shows his own Eastern view of the Japanese-American liaison.
