Ballet: The Merry Widow

Comic ballet in three acts

Ronald Hynd's choreography for the ballet version of Ferenc Lehár's timelessly popular operetta has been one of the most popular pieces for dance stages since its premiere in 1975. The work is difficult to classify in terms of genre: it is built from classical elements and full of humorous twists and turns and is best described as a "comic ballet". Surprisingly, given Lehár's Hungarian origins, Hynd's adaptation only made it into the repertoire of the Hungarian National Ballet in 2014. After touring Hungarian communities in neighboring countries, the quirky comedy, accompanied by the wonderful melodies of the well-known operetta, can now be enjoyed in the opera house.
