Almost 30 years ago, the Deutsche Oper Berlin last saw a premiere of Richard Wagner's DIE MEISTERSINGER. Now the monumental opera is returning to the Wagner House on Bismarckstraße in a new production by Jossi Wieler, Anna Viebrock and Sergio Morabito. For a short time, Markus Stenz takes over the musical direction from Sir Donald Runnicles, who was ill.
More popular than almost any other stage work by Richard Wagner, DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NUREMBERG are loved and hated at the same time. The piece combines a cheerful and comprehensible comedy plot with a midsummer night's drunken play about madness and the reality of love, but at the same time claims to be a founding manifesto of German national art and is therefore historically burdened in its reception like hardly any other work by Richard Wagner. At the same time, and first and foremost, DIE MEISTERSINGER is a piece about music and making music.
Music is the central purpose in life for almost all the characters in the play. Serving and caring for it is the purpose of the "Meistersingerzunft", which has given itself a strict and demanding set of rules for this purpose. The service to music thus also determines the life of David and Magdalena, the apprentice boys and girls and especially that of Eva, the daughter of the wealthy Veit Pogner. He gives her the choice of bridegroom - on one condition: "It has to be a master", the winner of a public singing contest. And so, out of love for Eva, Walther von Stolzing, the only, albeit musically highly talented, “non-musician” on the stage staff, agrees to this. He finds help from Hans Sachs of all people. He is a "master" and at the same time a reformer of that art world - and also in love with Eva.
Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito have been producing music theater together since 1994. Her work has received numerous awards: her production of ARIADNE AUF NAXOS at the 2001 Salzburg Festival was voted performance of the year. In 2002 and 2012, the duo was voted "Directing Team of the Year", in 2006 they received the German Theater Prize DER FAUST in the category "Best Opera Director" for DOKTOR FAUST and in 2012 for DIE GLUCKliche HAND / DESTINY, and their production BERENIKE, QUEEN OF ARMENIA by Nicolo Jommelli was hailed as "Dig of the Year" in 2014. The productions were created in the often surprising, subversive and surreal-realistic rooms of the set designer Anna Viebrock, who has had a congenial artistic partnership with Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito since 1994. Her successful Stuttgart production of Bellini's LA SONNAMBULA premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2019 as a new production.
