About the piece
Impressive songs and colossal tableaux accompany a story of intrigue, power struggles and an affair between stepmother and son in Ottorino Respighi's last great opera. Surrounded by political struggles, the characters become entangled in personal conflicts that mercilessly lead to catastrophe and end with a cruel outcome on the stake. For LA FIAMMA, Respighi created music that goes far beyond the scope of his illustrative "Trilogia romana," for which he is known in the concert hall today. Nevertheless, the composer remains true to his dazzling sound language at its core - the result is a musical amalgamation of French impressionism, influences from Russian music and a classicist treatment of Italian Renaissance music. The archaic material and the expansive dimensions of the opera epic are reminiscent of the monumental film that was gaining popularity at the same time it was written, with which LA FIAMMA hit a nerve of the times and enjoyed international success soon after its premiere. Over the decades, the work fell behind, but in 2015 the renowned critic and musicologist Paolo Isotta praised LA FIAMMA as a unique symbiosis of historicism and modernity that claims a place among the musical-dramatic masterpieces of the 20th century.

About the production
Director Christof Loy continues his series of opulent operas from the first third of the 20th century at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. While Zandonai's FRANCESCA DA RIMINI premiered a few months before the outbreak of World War I, Schreker's DER SCHATZGRÄBER and Korngold's DAS WUNDER DER HELIANE were created in the "Golden Twenties". When Respighi's LA FIAMMA was premiered in Rome in 1934, Europe had long been in the face of fascism. The plot about the brutal show trial, fueled by the hysterical masses, bluntly reflects this very grimace of social upheaval.
