Il Polifemo - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Il Polifemo

Opera seria in three acts by
Nicola Antonio Porpora

Libretto by Paolo Antonio Rolli

Nicola Porpora was not only a composer but also a singing teacher, from whose school the great castrato Farinelli emerged. In his operas he therefore relied everything on the vocal virtuosity of his stage stars and left spectacular roles for today's world stars of the countertenor field such as Max Emanuel Cencic (who is celebrating his 40th stage anniversary with this production) and Franco Fagioli. With Il Polifemo, Porpora challenged his competitor Handel in London in 1735, and the content of this opera is also a real battle of the titans: the focus is on the confrontation between Odysseus and the cyclops Polyphemus and his tragic love for the nymph Galatea.
