Hänsel und Gretel

Fairytale opera in three scenes
Based on the poem by Adelheid Wette

Premiere December 9, 2006

In German with German and English subtitles

In the fairytale forest, familiar characters meet: the poor siblings who get lost in the forest and the evil gingerbread witch. The story comes to a head in the famous gingerbread house, which is sweet on the outside but a death trap on the inside. In 1893, Engelbert Humperdinck created what is probably the most famous fairytale opera in the musical theater repertoire based on the Brothers Grimm. In Katharina Thalbach's production, this original is enriched with other characters from the Grimm fairytales, making it a celebration for the whole family. Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Big Bad Wolf take children and adults alike on a musical journey that ends with the downfall of the witches' kingdom and the victory of good - proclaimed by the disenchanted gingerbread children: "Redeemed, freed, for all time."
