Die schöne Müllerin - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Die schöne Müllerin
Franz Schubert's song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin is a one-person drama: a wandering journeyman miller falls in love with his master's wife and is initially intoxicated by this love, until the rejection of the beloved miller's wife drives him to despair and suicide. In the 20 songs that Schubert composed in 1823 based on poems by Wilhelm Müller, the tragedy of a person who seeks support in nature and ultimately loses himself gradually unfolds. Director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan, who most recently staged Offenbach's La Périchole at the MusikTheater an der Wien, is developing a scenic version of the beautiful miller with bass-baritone Florian Boesch. With the Musicbanda Franui, which describes itself as a "transformer station between classical music, folk music, jazz and contemporary chamber music", he retells the 200-year-old story in the interplay between the singer and life-size puppets.
