Die gefesselte Phantasie
Imagine an island of flowers, beautiful and peaceful, where all the inhabitants are poets. Too good to be true, and so it is in Raimund's magic play DIE FESSELTE PHANTASIE, which premiered in 1828 in the Theater in der Leopoldstadt. Two evil magic sisters come to disturb the beautiful peace. According to an oracle, in order to expel the two, the queen of the island would have to marry a partner who is worthy of her. The queen, in turn, has a will of her own and has also sworn to marry only one poet. When she tries to resolve the conflict with the evil magic sisters amicably, they devastate the island and all the cowardly courtiers flee. The queen then announces that she will marry the one who writes her the most beautiful poem, whereupon the magic sisters capture the imagination so that no one can write another poem. From then on, the grotesquely fantastic magic game takes its crazy course.
