In The Cunning Little Vixen, Leoš Janáček, then almost 70 years old, gave free rein to his love of the ever-renewing nature, of which both human and animal individuals are only temporary, but wonderful and precious parts. The opera is bursting with playfulness, humor, wildness, love, sadness, wisdom - simply life in its purest form. Janáček found the original theme for the piece in Rudolf Těsnohlídek's newspaper serial, inspired by Stanislav Lolek's caricatures. Bringing foxes, a mosquito, a frog, chickens and other animals to the opera stage was unprecedented and extremely daring at the time – but not so surprising in retrospect, as Janáček was an artist who always provoked and experimented...

Today, The Cunning Little Vixen is one of the world's most celebrated and frequently staged Czech operas. With its alternately happy and sad story, it is a title with great potential to captivate audiences, and thanks to its wit, deep ideas and emotionality, the work appeals to adults, while children are enchanted by its picturesque nature and exquisite setting. In his production, director Ondřej Havelka depicts the comical animal world and the world of strange people lightly and poetically, but he also digs beneath the surface of pure scenic beauty, revealing that the relationships between the characters in Janáček's opera are far from idyllic as they seem.
