The most prominent venues for Vienna’s classical concerts
Musikverein Vienna
The Musikverein is one of the most famous concert halls in the world. Acoustically, its Golden Hall is considered practically perfect and offers an incomparable fullness of sound that inspires musicians and visitors alike. The Musikverein is where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra play their traditional New Year’s Concert, which is broadcast worldwide.
Vienna Konzerthaus
With its four halls, it provides space for large orchestras as well as for intimate chamber music and vocal concertos. Its architecture blends Jugendstil with modernism. Visitors value the particular proximity to the artists and the varied programme ranging from classical music to crossover.
Schönbrunn Palace
In the Baroque halls of Schönbrunn Palace, visitors experience concerts in the same surroundings in which the imperial family itself once had music performed to them. The splendid setting and historical acoustics bestow the pieces by Mozart, Strauss and Beethoven with an exceptional intensity.
Vienna’s beginnings as a hotspot for classical concerts
As far back as the 18th century, Vienna became a centre for classical music concerts under the Habsburg family. Churches and noble palaces were the first to host major performances that laid the foundation for Viennese classicism.
With composers like Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, a distinct style developed that united elegance and expressive power and that elevated Vienna to the musical centre of Europe.
In the 19th century, classical music became an experience for all thanks to Schubert, Brahms and the Strauss family. This tradition continues to shape Vienna: in the historical concert halls, the spirit of the era that made Vienna the capital of classical music concerts continues to live on.
