The good soldier Don José falls for the exotically beautiful Carmen, who works in the notorious cigarette factory in Seville. Don José risks his rank for Carmen, deserts and joins a gang of smugglers with her. But Carmen's desire for freedom and her lust for life and love are too much for the soldier from northern Spain. Carmen soon leaves him to have fun with the acclaimed torero Escamillo. But while Escamillo kills an animal in the bullring, José kills the woman he loves. Georges Bizet's »Carmen«, which premiered in 1875, is one of the most popular operas of all. This is not least due to Bizet's music, which, with Carmen's »Habanera« or the torero song, has had a significant impact on the idea of Spanish music. At the Semperoper, director Axel Köhler staged »Carmen« in an austere space in which the harsh world of cigarette workers has its place as well as the colorful festival of bullfighting.
