Boris Godunow - Premiere

In German with German surtitles

After the Tsar's death, political turmoil prevail in Russia. Urged by police truncheons, the people of Moscow ask that the nobleman Boris Godunov take over the rule. Boris himself wants to reject the crown, but internally he craves power. He allegedly had the young son of the old Tsar murdered in order to get to the crown. Or is the story of the dead Tsarevich, whose bones miraculously shine in his casket, just a rumor? Who then is Dimitri, who pretends to be the heir to the throne and who gathers troops against the Tsar in the border area?

"Boris Godunov" is a play about truth and lies in politics, about greed for power and the burden of political responsibility.

In 1998, Harry Kupfer already staged the original version of the Volksoper, now the director is in the hands of another old master: Peter Konwitschny, who was elected director of the year 2018 in the magazine Opernwelt, celebrates his Volksoper debut.
