Ballet: Swan Lake
Classical ballet in three acts
Tchaikovsky's first ballet is the most popular classical piece in ballet literature: while the love troubles between a prince forced into marriage and a girl enchanted in the shape of a swan are among the most enchanting fairy tales of Russian Romanticism, the piece failed when it was premiered in 1877. The choreographers who who created the premiere were simply no match for Tchaikovsky's genius. Only the choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov made the piece famous and established a tradition. Most companies dance the piece to this day to this day. In 1988 Rudi van Dantzig and Toer van Schayk revised this classic.
The same ballerina embodies both Odette - the pure, innocent white swan - and Odile - the seductive, manipulative black swan in the Hungarian National Ballet's production.
