Ballet: Manon - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Ballet: Manon

Ballet in three acts
Performance duration: 3 hours, with 2 intermissions.

During his career, Sir Kenneth MacMillan managed to reinvent not only the language of ballet, but also its themes: on many occasions he resorted to modern, socially and societally charged themes that no genre, let alone dance, had ever dared to touch. This criticism was also levelled at him after the premiere of Manon in 1974: although the piece was well received by audiences, critics were shocked by an immoral plot that was completely unprecedented in the world of classical ballet at the time. Leighton Lucas created the ballet's score based on Massenet's works: although he did not use anything from Manon itself, he compiled the musical material from the composer's many other operas and oratorios, which Martin Yates later re-orchestrated in 2011. Manon will be performed on the Opera House stage with MacMillan's original sets and costumes.
