Anatevka

Musical by Jerry Bock

In German language

New York, 1916: When the poet Sholem Aleichem is buried, hundreds of thousands line the streets and pay their last respects to the author.

New York, 1964: Almost 50 years after Alejchem's death, the musical Fiddler on the Roof by Jerry Bock, Joseph Stein and Sheldon Harnick, based on his stories, premiered. Prices are soon hailing, and the musical begins its triumphal march.

Vienna, 2003: Anatevka, as the musical is called in German, has its premiere in Matthias David's production at the Volksoper. Balancing between humor and seriousness, it becomes one of the most popular productions of Volksoper audiences.

Why this world success? In any case, the story does not sound like a classic musical: Tevje, the milkman, his wife Golde and their five daughters live in the Jewish shtetl Anatevka. What begins as a fairy tale turns out to be a highly realistic story: the daughters' marriage plans put the father's sense of tradition to the test - and when a pogrom descends on Anatevka, the family is scattered. But the play not only tells about life in the shtetl, its core is a universal story of growing up and fragile traditions.
