“There where the ore is buried, where the day never shines, where the bones lie, where no sky cries”: Brixlegg, Tyrol, 1953. Aloisia and Rudolf meet on the train platform; she is looking for a father for her daughter, he is a mother for his children through a newspaper advertisement. Marked by war experiences, work in the mines and the world of post-war village patriarchy, the two decide to live together, to start anew in the family bond. The past, in the form of Aloisia's sister, Herta, breaks into our lives together, as do the repressed traumas of working underground, which repeatedly come back to consciousness in nightmarish sequences.
The author tells of a life that appears to be shaped and dominated by the omnipresent and mighty Tyrolean mountains, far from the world, and yet takes place right in the middle of the history of the 20th century: The political events of the time accompany the family cosmos and show the landmarks of the changing times the life story of the Austrian post-war generations.
Lisa Wentz wins the Retzhofer Drama Prize 2021 with ADERN.
